Prime Time

Bay Area - 7 Voices - Much Music

Founded in 2009, Prime Time was an award-winning jazz-centered contemporary a cappella group from the California Bay Area which specialized in heartfelt singing, exquisite musicianship, and an approachable, honest performance style.

As of May 2017, Prime Time is no longer active.  We wish a big hearty thanks to all of our friends and fellow singers over the years.

Thanks and farewell!

All good things must come to an end, and, sadly, that time has come for Prime Time.

Founded in 2009, and reconstituted multiple times, Prime Time has been performing all over the Bay Area for eight years.  Highlights have included three times competing, and one time hosting the Bay Area Regional Harmony Sweepstakes;  Singing at the fabulous University Club; Being part of the Fog City Singers inaugural concert; and many wonderful nights of music with friends and fellow singers.

Thanks so much for lending us your ears through the years!

Welcome Colleen Mahal and John Kelley

Prime Time is pleased to be back to full strength as a six part group, and we couldn't be happier with our new recruits.

Colleen is actually a pro singer, who gigs constantly with rock and blues bands.  She brings some awesome performance moxie and a sweet high, seemingly endless and versatile top soprano sound that fits so well with Miya and Caia.

John is also a tremendously accomplished singer, arranger, and performer, having sung with Red, Hot and Blue and the Whiffenpoofs at Yale (along with John Rae-Grant), and for many years as both bass and alto in the Grace Cathedral Choir.  He now splits the difference between his two parts, covering the huge middle between Dan's tenor and John R-G's bass.

We were very excited to premier the new group with four sings at Dan's High School Music night in December.

Having sung our swansong as Regional Champs, Prime Time is looking forward to what's next.

With every change, there's opportunity, and we are looking for the right singer(s) to join us on the next phase of our journey.  If that might be you, check out our auditions page and let us know you are interested.

Prime Time on Acaville Radio!

We were recently interviewed by Acaville Radio (an online a cappella radio), and we were informed that our 30-minute interview which also includes us singing four songs (live!) from our current repertoire, will be streamed Tuesday, February 17 at 6 p.m. PST on their Web site: We are very excited about how this turned out, and we hope you'll enjoy hearing us share our thoughts about the group, our music and the four songs we recorded as part of this interview. If you happen to miss this, you can also catch it Saturday, February 21 at 3 p.m. PST when they will rebroadcast this interview. You can also download their app on to your mobile device from the App Store (called Acaville) and stream through there too. Our heartfelt Thanks to Rachael and Aaron for this unique opportunity to share our music with the worldwide online community. Enjoy, and be sure to check out our MEDIA Page for the songs we recorded for the Interview.

Harmony Sweeps Finals - A Blast!

We had a GREAT time sharing the stage at the National Harmony Sweepstakes - NATIONAL FINALS (representing the SF Bay Area as Regional Champions), with six other winning groups from across the country as well as last year's National Champions. What a splendid night of Harmony it was! Each group sang our best set of 12 minutes of music to entertain the 2000+ bay area a cappella enthusiasts whilst also engaging each other in a friendly competition.

Our heartiest congratulations to Women of the World, The Quintessential Five, and Sea Note for placing in that order, and the remaining groups - Catatonic, 3 AM, and #FOURTY4B (besides us of course), for giving it your all, making it one of the fiercest National Finals ever! Shout out also to Honey Whiskey Trio (last year's National Champions) for your thoughtful gifts for each of us, for being fantastic hosts, and soothing our ears with your ever so tight harmonies! Hope to share the stage with you all again some day.

A special THANK YOU to our loyal families and friends far and wide for your constant support, and best wishes. We look forward to seeing you soon at a concert around the bay area.

Do check out our Media Page for a link to our YouTube Channel containing videos of our performance at the Sweeps this year.

2014 SF Bay Area Regional Champions!

Prime Time is absolutely thrilled to have been declared the 2014 San Francisco Bay Area Harmony Sweepstakes Champions following a very closely contested regional competition on March 8, 2014 at the sold-out Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco! Woohoo!!

We would like to thank John Neal for the tremendous opportunity available to a cappella groups year after year, to the five judges for bestowing upon us this incredible honor, the nine other amazingly talented groups including last year's winners - Ro Sham Bo, that we had the pleasure of sharing the stage with, and to all our families, friends, fans, and supporters of a cappella and the Bay Area Arts in general for being there and cheering us ALL on.

We look forward to seeing you at the National Finals in May.

Harmony Sweeps 2014 - Here we come...AGAIN!

Prime Time is thrilled and honored to have been selected to compete in this year's San Francisco Regionals of the Harmony Sweepstakes Festival and Competition!

With close to a record number of group entries this year, making it obvious as to just how many talented vocal groups there are in the Bay Area, the organizers had much deliberations before selecting nine groups to this year's contest roster.

Woo Hoo! 3rd Place at Harmony Sweeps Regionals

We had a blast at The Harmony Sweepstakes on Saturday.  It's always a fun event, but the talent level of these groups was really impressive.  We're tickled to have made the top three with Ro Sham Bo and the T Sisters, both excellent groups with lots of time under their belts.  Special thanks to Caia and Wil for doing original arrangements which really pleased the audience, and to friends in the audience for cheering us on.

Harmony Sweepstakes Here We Come

Prime Time is revved up for our first Harmony Sweepstakes competition this weekend in San Francisco.  We had a terrific coaching session with Daniel Hughes (of Choral Project fame) and are very excited to be singing not one, but two original arrangements.

Its an honor to be even chosen to compete, and we are thrilled to be among these fine groups competing.  See you there!

Awesome holiday show at Savvy

We had a fabulous time singing our entire repertoire for an assembled group of friends, fans, and wine afficianados on Sunday Dec 9.  Highlights included having Wil's friends come down from Pleasanton, Caia's from San Francisco, and John's longtime friend Kristin Hasty all the way up from So. Cal, plus lots of the guys barbershop friends.

A huge thanks to our sound man - big Max Lanfranconi, and to Jennifer and the Savvy staff for hosting.

A wonderful evening.  We plan to do this much more regularly.  Stay tuned for future dates.

Prime Time at the University Club

We had a terrific time singing at the ever so secret and exclusive holiday dinner of alumni of Yale University's most infamous singing group - The Society of Orpheus and Bacchus on Wed Dec 5th.  The gathering included Yale alums and their SO's from the classes of '57 through 2010!  It was so much fun singing for some of the folks who got John started in a cappella.  The drinks were good too.

This officially kicks off our holiday season, with an upcoming show at the Savvy Cellar in Mountain View on the evening of the 9th, Milpitas High School on the 12th and carolling (likely on Santana Row) on Sept 19th.

The "New" Line Up

We've been remiss in welcoming Caia Brookes, who has been singing second soprano with us since March 2012. Caia is well known around SF Bay a cappella, having sung in several prominent groups including VoiceCraft, Flying without Instruments, and One Night Stand.  Jennifer Ayre (our first soprano) is particularly pleased to be singing in a group with Caia again, as the voice match they developed before is pretty spectacular, and they still like each other.

Great Fun Carolling

Prime Time had a busy holiday season, which we completed with an evening in Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek, carolling for Jennifer's mom and her friends, and then dropping in on several local restaurants and bars.

Jen's sultry Santa Baby was a big hit, as was our jazz treatment of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.

We're already excited about next year's holiday season.
